Referencing

Mount Lawley Senior High School uses APA 7. The following guide should help you to reference most resources you use:

Referencing is an important academic skill but it takes it time and experience to become an expert.

Watch the following video to find out why referencing is important.

Use a referencing generator like MyBib to record and save your bibliography

*Not all generators are reliable. e.g. Cite This for Me asks you to pay to reference in APA 7 style.

MyBib is a tool you can use for creating your bibliography but you may need to edit the information you are given as it may not be correct.

This website is good because it will also tell you if the resource you’re adding is credible and reliable.

Watch this video to see how to use MyBib.

Use a referencing generator like Citefast to record and save your bibliography

*Not all generators are reliable. e.g. Cite This for Me asks you to pay to reference in APA 7 style.

Citefast is another tool you can use for creating your bibliography but again you may need to edit the information you are given as it may not be correct.

Watch this video to see how to use Citefast.

A direct quote uses the exact words of the author to communicate an idea or argument. Paraphrasing is expressing the author’s views or ideas in your own words. In both cases, you must provide citations.
You should use a direct quote only when the words of the author cannot be rephrased or when they illustrate your argument.

If you only need to reference a few sources, or you need to focus on writing an assignment, it could be more time efficient to create them manually. Citation generators, like Citefast and MyBib can help you with the referencing process but It is important to understand what your reference should look like because citation generators are not always completely accurate. You may need to edit the information they provide.
